What Did I Learn From This Trip? La unidad es algo fundamental en este viaje, creo que si cada quien hubiera hecho su propio camino no hubiese sido un buen viaje.
The Most Challenging Part / Aspect Of This Trip Was: Sacar el camion del lodo en Nazareth 1.
In What Way Were You Inspired by The Sea To Sea Tour? Por loque era para una buena causa, pensar en aquellos que quedaron sin alimentos me motivo
a realizar este viaje y ademas fue un buena aventura.
How Will This / Or Has This Impacted Your Life? De entrada fue un impacto, porque era primer vez que hacia esto, pero no me arrepiento y si se vuelve
a realizar siempre voy a estar dispuesto.

What Did I Learn From This Trip? I learned to be a better friend to others. I also learned a lot more about my country. Others were so nice and understanding with me in many different ways. Brian taught me a lot during the trip as well.
The Most Challenging Part / Aspect Of This Trip Was: The most challenging part was to complete the trip even though there were obstacles that we had to overcome.
In What Way Were You Inspired by The Sea To Sea Tour?I was inspired to do things that have never been done before.
How Will This / Or Has This Impacted Your Life? This experience has impacted my life in a positive way. I was impressed at how we learned to communicate even though there was a language barrier. We made friendships and were able to get to know each other well and that is something special for me

What Did I Learn From This Trip?
-how bueatiful the country of Nicaragua is at this time of the year.
-the roads being in worse shape than I would have thought, and that I should have used a differient bike.
-how poor some people and how they make do with what they have.
-that even that they are poor they are content people.
The Most Challenging Part / Aspect Of This Trip Was:
-riding my bike on some of the dirt roads that we biked on.
-trying to sleep after my accident at the bridge at the end of the second day of biking.
-the big hill at Rio Blanco.
In What Way Were You Inspired by The Sea To Sea Tour?
-that God once again took care of each and every one of us on this trip
-that we had new energy each and ever day.
-the beauty of the land that we road accross that we seen each day.
-the people that I road with and that supported us and how we supported each other during the trip.
How Will This / Or Has This Impacted Your Life?
-that I became more award of some of the injustice that goes on in Nicaragua and a lot of other countries as well.
-that I would like to go back to Nicaragua sometime to do some more volunter work and also see some more of the country.
-that I need to learn some Spanish so I can have a better coversation with the people there.

What Did I Learn From This Trip? What a blast it can be to do a trip like this, with other people that have the same goal.
How important and what a blessing to have family and friends
praying for us.
How mentally relaxing to not have to think about when or what
to eat or where to sleep.
Thank you support team!!!
The Most Challenging Part / Aspect Of This Trip Was: Physically; climb after Rio Blanco going steep up,and a long climb before Siuna.
Mentally, Seeing so many people with so little.
In What Way Were You Inspired by The Sea To Sea Tour?Inspired to do something like this more often.
That combined group effort can make a difference.
That we need to support our mission minded people not only financially, but also physically.
How Will This / Or Has This Impacted Your Life? It has impacted already, through a church presentation, and may be more so by a article in the two local newspapers.
What better way to evangelize.
What a boost to keep going.

What Did I Learn From This Trip? I learned a lot of things really. Some on the top of the list are…
1. I learned about the work of Accion Medica. I had heard the name before and even have seen the symbol on vehicles around town. I was so impressed with their work and getting to know more about them.
2. I learned a lot more about Nicaragua and the people of Nicaragua. I was amazed by the diversity between the east and the west part of Nicaragua.
3. I learned that there is almost no bike problem that Luis, Nestor, and Chepe can’t fix. Their resourcefulness and creativity in repairs was fun to watch and it always happened in record timing.
The Most Challenging Part / Aspect Of This Trip Was: The character building aspects, right?
1. The road was a bit of a shocker and added to the challenge of the whole trip. I have never done something so physically demanding for 8 days. Even though the road conditions added to the challenge, in the end I enjoyed biking these roads more than the pavement.
2. After years of living in Nicaragua it still is tough for me to see the poverty in Nicaragua especially in a country that could be so rich in natural resources.
In What Way Were You Inspired by The Sea To Sea Tour? 1. As it always does for me seeing a little old lady or man carry a heavy load of wood or a young child carrying a log home or washing laundry in the river touches a spot in my heart. They work so hard to accomplish their basic needs from the very young to the very old.
2. It was amazing to be a part of this group of bikers. We were diverse in our backgrounds, ages, and abilities. It was so neat to see the group work together and how everyone was able to complete it. It was inspiring to watch those for whom it was more difficult for one reason or another such as an injury or bike problem. It seemed that no one ever thought it an option to give up. God continues to accomplish His GREAT WORK through ordinary people.
How Will This / Or Has This Impacted Your Life? Ah this is the reason I haven’t written my reflection yet because I’ve been thinking about this alot lately. I think it will be something I continue to think about as I share the story with others. The one impact I’ve been thinking about the most is the value of community and simplicity. As I mentioned above it saddens me to see people living in poverty, but so many of the people we saw along the way put a higher value on community than we do. Their lives are so simple that they naturally center their lives around community. Life in North America can be very fast paced with lots of distractions. I’ve been challenged through this trip to think about how I can embrace community and live more simply.

What Did I Learn From This Trip? I was reminded once again “How true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ.” I was thankful to learn about excellent work that Accion Medica is doing in partnership with CRWRC. Above all I learned some more about the strength of the body of believers. How we can bless each other, support each other, pray for each other. We felt it within the group and we just knew that we were supported from back home which provided amazing energy.
The Most Challenging Part / Aspect Of This Trip Was: Executing patience. The support team did an excellent job pre-trip organizing and day-day during the trip but dealing with the unexpected Nicaraguan factor was a bit of a challenge for me. To do this event as a team was a beautiful experience but I admit that I am used to travelling in a much smaller group.
In What Way Were You Inspired by The Sea To Sea Tour? I was inspired by how God put all the pieces of this team together to make it successful. The Support Team, Spiritual and Devotional leaders, experienced bikers with great advice, the paramedic and others with medical background, irreplaceable bike mechanics, translators, publicity man for along the route, the consummate sweeper, pyromaniacs, chainsaw mechanic and a crazy man to come up with an idea like this.
How Will This / Or Has This Impacted Your Life? Like some others I’m still thinking about this. As I go ahead I am more grateful every day for having been part of this. I think I would do something like this again for sure but hopefully with our children and that will be a while. In the meantime we can still be involved where we are. I was really blessed to see the Canadian Food Grains Bank working and really feel encouraged in the work we do locally for that.

What Did I Learn From This Trip? I learned what a wonderful thing it is to bless people with your time and in doing so, I was doubly blessed in return. Supporting the cause of the Sea-to-Sea Nicaragua trip is important, but by participating I learned that:
- I was able to bike across a country
- I learned a lot about Nicaragua–it’s people, how the government works, what people do for a living and for entertainment, what they eat, how different the geography (and roads in particular) are in different parts of the country, how they celebrate holidays and so much more
- I learned more about the great work being done by the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee, the Canadian Foodgrains Bank and Accion Medica Cristiana
- I learned that it doesn’t matter where you are from or your age or your occupation, when you have a common goal and Jesus as your guide you can accomplish great things together
- I learned that spending two weeks with strangers can make you fast friends
- I learned that I like rice and beans, but I like fruit and vegetables more
The Most Challenging Part / Aspect Of This Trip Was: The rocky roads were a challenge, but this was also my favourite part of the trip. The difficult roads evened us bikers out a bit, we stopped more often to take short breaks and talk to people along the route
In What Way Were You Inspired by The Sea To Sea Tour? The Sea-to-Sea Nicaragua tour has inspired me to seek out other ways I can be a more active participant in the charities and causes I support financially.
How Will This / Or Has This Impacted Your Life? I’m humbled by the awesome experience of the Sea-to-Sea trip and amazed how much money we were able to raise together with our supporters back home. It is incredible to think of how many people we are able to help in Nicaragua. As I talk about this trip with others, I will encourage them to particate in worthwhile causes when the opportunity arises for them.
I also have a much greater love of biking and hope to continue to pursue this physical activity once the weather gets nicer in Canada.

What Did I Learn From This Trip? God revealed Himself to me in a new way during the trip. He taught me that He has an agenda far greater than mine for expanding His Kingdom and making Himself known. He chooses how, when, where, and through what means He will reveal Himself. I have two options: I can maintain my rules and ways and be a hindrance, or I can choose to remain flexible and available and experience Him doing great things in, through, and around me.
The Most Challenging Part / Aspect Of This Trip Was: near the end of the ride to Siuna. I was climbing a hill, feeling a little weak, and just felt like giving up. Suddenly my chain came off the bike and I toppled over. Thankfully Luis (one of our awesome bike mechanics) was right behind me and had my bike ready to go in no time. Shortly after that, we came to one of the support vechicles and I drank a little Gatorade…that and 2 icecreams later…and I was good as new.
In What Way Were You Inspired by The Sea To Sea Tour? I was impacted by the wide variety of riders we had on the trip and the fact that we all made it from Sea to Sea. Sometimes, we can do more than we believe we can.
I am also inspired by the grace that was continually extended by team members to other team members and how extending grace in difficult times led to love and deepening of relationships.
How Will This / Or Has This Impacted Your Life? I really enjoy riding a bike now and hope to continue riding. It is a great alternate form of exercise.
I am grateful for having had the opportunity to get to know each of the riders and to participate on this awesome adventure. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

What Did I Learn From This Trip? Where do I begin?
-I learned that I really do like biking!
-I learned and saw first-hand the impact that Acción Medica Cristiana has had in the communities along the Atlantic coast. This was exciting because I only knew them by name before-hand.
-The commitment to community and teamwork make reaching the goal not only possible but lots more fun because you have people to share the accomplishment with.
-I learned that I have a whole bunch of crazy biking friends that live in Canada. :0)
The Most Challenging Part / Aspect Of This Trip Was: While there were challenges in different ways along our tour one of the most challenging aspects for me was to realize how selfish I am in what I perceive to be my needs and desires. Biking through areas of extreme need not only physical but emotional need was hard to see and left me searching for ways that I can make a change in their lives and the lives of many others I see and work with daily. Pride and “experience” wells up in me and I want help make changes in order to say that I/we made an impact. Instead God is calling me to humbly pray for and serve according to their needs and not according to what I want to do for them or think would be best.
While this may have been the most challenging aspect it is also the most transforming as I surrender my ideals to the Lord and let Him stretch me to serve, love and live for others with a new attitude of humble service.
In What Way Were You Inspired by The Sea To Sea Tour?-Inspired to actively live out a life of service to others as I saw so selflessly demonstrated by others on our team
-I am inspired by all those survivors of Hurricane Felix who have not given up on life but continue live a life dedicated to the Lord and who work along AMC to help others make changes for sustainability but also changes in the spiritual lives of those in their communities.
-I have been inspired by fellow team members to look at communication as being intentional in valuing, listening and appreciating the thoughts, experiences and struggles of others in a real and caring way.
How Will This / Or Has This Impacted Your Life? -The trip also inspired me ride my bike to lots of places that I never would have considered before and to just get out and enjoy more of God’s beautiful creation.
-I will not take the news of a hurricane as lightly after seeing the long lasting effects and changes brought about in the lives of many Nicaraguans.
Let’s go again!

What Did I Learn From This Trip? I learned about friendships , also to be good partners because every time that someone was needing help in their bike or other things everyone was ready to extend their hand offering help ,another aspect that makes me feel good is because it did not matter that we were strangers after half day i felt like if knew every body , I got to be familiar with Brian, Carey, Mary ,John etc but after i felt the same friendship with the others. Other aspect is that all of us are brothers in Christ no matter what country we are. We are one in Jesus . Also I Don’t want leave aside the special attention of Kevin Abril and Rachel . In few words I can say that I learned that we were called to serve .
The Most Challenging Part / Aspect Of This Trip Was: The first challenge I had to face was be out of my house for several days especially in the end of the year , the other challenge was that I have never run too many kilometers in the beginning and I was wondering my self if I would be in good shape to do this trip but I said it is not a long way every day I’m going to try. Also after talking with Mark I felt encouraged because he said that the group of riders coming were not professionals but regular amateur bikers like ourselves. Other challenge was to run the day two and three with pain in my arms because my shock absorber was no good, after the pills that Brian gave me I felt better about the climbs. No was to difficult to me because I have practiced mountain bike before . It does not matter the pain I felt ,the burning sun , the hungry, or others kind of suffering we had because we rode through the pain and it made us stronger. Thanks be to God , Marcos ,Ken and every body that made possible .THANKS

What Did I Learn From This Trip? Una de ellas es que si ponemos a Dios que dirija nuestros pasos todo lo que hacemos nos sale bien;
existen personas dispuestas a sacrificarse por el bienestar de otras que ni siquiera conocen;
cuando una persona se dispone a ayudar hace cosas increibles
Tengo que aprender a hablar otra lengua además de la miskita, para poder aprovechar mejor estos momentos de intercambio.
The Most Challenging Part / Aspect Of This Trip Was: Estar entre personas que hablaban un idioma diferente al mío, pero, sobreviví
In What Way Were You Inspired by The Sea To Sea Tour? Me motivó a seguir trabajando por las personas que necesitan una palabra de ánimo, a ayudarles a irse desarrollando, a que encuentren alternativas para hacerle frente a la extrema pobreza en que viven.
How Will This / Or Has This Impacted Your Life? El ver que nadie se dió por vencido, todos llegaron a la meta final aunque talves con dificultades, pero llegaron.

What Did I Learn From This Trip? I learned first of all how much I love doing exactly what we did together. That is, biking, talking, singing, praying, laughing, reflecting, seeing new places and people, and doing it all together for Jesus and for people he loves. I learned again how strong God’s grace in Jesus is for us all. We arrived largely as strangers to each other and parted as friends. This despite experiencing some stuff that could have separated us from each other. Nothing is impossible with God.
I learned just a bit more about Nicaragua’s beauty and about the gifts God has given to Nicaragua, as well as the challenges Nicaraguans face in simply trying to work and live. (Having to make use of poor quality bikes and tires etc, uncertain land titles, tough roads)etc, etc would make every day life that much harder.
Finally, I also learned never to leave on an adventure without a healthy supply of sunscreen, Pro-Max and bag balm.
The Most Challenging Part / Aspect Of This Trip Was: It’s hard to say, “most challenging”…
Here are some of the challenges I experienced…
1. Language barrier with our Nicaraguan friends
2. Realizing that “each member of the team must sacrifice a part of his/her autonomy for the sake of the team”, and that includes me.
3. Being the ‘chaplain’ and never knowing what kind of situation might pop up on any given day or what our logistics would be for our evening gatherings was a bit of a challenge.
4. By the time the trip was over I really felt the need for some personal time and I was really missing my wife and our family. Being apart was a challenge.
In What Way Were You Inspired by The Sea To Sea Tour?I was inspired to dream of this tour becoming an annual event with the aid stations set up by people from the communities we passed through. Pulperia proprietors perhaps? The people seemed to really enjoy the crazy spectacle of cyclists coming through town. A tour like this, with a competitive and a recreational option, that stopped in the same communities each year has the potential to become a national event that the country could really get excited about.
How Will This / Or Has This Impacted Your Life? It’s hard to say right now. It was amazing to experience how each of us had a gift to offer and each of us had need of the gifts of others. I am more aware of my own gifts but also my own weaknesses and humbled to realize how God is able to use both.
Randy Mann
What Did I Learn From This Trip? Nicaragua is a beautiful country with lots of potential, if resources are directed to address needs and the political leadership has the will to make improvements for its people.
The Most Challenging Part / Aspect Of This Trip Was: Physically, the non-paved roads were in worse condition than I expected. The days were long and challenging, but the feeling of completing the ride each day was exhilarating.
In What Way Were You Inspired by The Sea To Sea Tour? The camaraderie of the Sea to Sea team was awesome, especially the work of the organizers who also provided support throughout the journey. It was an inspirational example for me of the power of teamwork.
How Will This / Or Has This Impacted Your Life? I hope to participate in other mission-related activities in the future. This was my first opportunity to travel in such a capacity, and it was uplifting and rewarding. I still describe my experience to my friends as each day being a new adventure, and that overall the journey we completed was the biggest adventure I’ve had in my life.
Rachel Pontier
What Did I Learn From This Trip? I learned so much on this trip. I know a ton more about bikes and how they are put together, I know a lot more about competitive biking and what actually happens when people bike together as a team, and I learned about perseverance in the midst of pain and discomfort.
I learned a lot about group dynamics in an adult setting (vs. the teenage setting I am used to dealing with). John was and is an excellent leader and made everyone feel included and part of the group – his actions and responses were an example to me.
The Most Challenging Part / Aspect Of This Trip Was: The most challenging aspect of the trip was the beginning and the end. Our trip to the east coast was mentally and emotionally draining, but once we joined the rest of the group everyday was a joy and pleasure to serve you all.
After the trip was over and trying to switch gears (pun intended) back into school mode, was very difficult for me. I had finally run out of energy and all I wanted to do was sleep, but classes and upcoming events demanded attention.
Not to worry, I think I have finally recovered.
In What Way Were You Inspired by The Sea To Sea Tour? I was inspired by everyone! By Stacie and her mad biking skills, by Randy and John because everyday was the best day of their life; by Chepe and his servant’s heart, by Kevin and April and their constant compassion and service, by Carey and Aimee’s constant practice and watching them finally accomplish the goal they had been training months for, by Pieter and Rod for getting back on the bike and by the Nicaraguan beauty in it’s landscape and it’s people.
How Will This / Or Has This Impacted Your Life? It is tough to know how this trip has impacted me. Right now, it is a trip of a lifetime, but who knows how God will use this experience in the future?
Brian Shenk
What Did I Learn From This Trip? It was great to meet Nicaraguans on this trip. Their reception of us was great. Despite having very little themselves, they were very generous in sharing what they have. We were welcomed to sing and dance and share food with them; in short we were invited to be in their country with EVERYTHING they had to share.
The Most Challenging Part / Aspect Of This Trip Was: The most challenging part was dealing with the chaffing to my bum as a result of not using chamois butter from the beginning of the tour. The roads were nothing compared to that problem. I’m sold on that stuff and will be using it regularly from here on in. It’s great stuff and I’m sold. Thanks Alie, Wim and Rod for the use of yours!!
In What Way Were You Inspired by The Sea To Sea Tour? The experience of a trip to Central America for the purpose of providing relief was amazing. I have felt this way when traveling to Africa as well. I have learned that the more I share of myself, the more the more likely the people are to want to get to know me. Being vulnerable is not being naive – it’s being genuine. What does the Lord require of us; to do justice to love mercy and to walk humbly with our God.
How Will This / Or Has This Impacted Your Life? I will continue to seek out opportunities to travel to countries in need of relief. I have a good friend in Nicaragua that I now hope to keep in touch with and also to see again – hopefully, to cycle somewhere with. I had a great time getting to know and love the people of Nicaragua and also was blessed by being used to assist them in their efforts to recover from Hurricane Felix.
Dave Stienstra
What Did I Learn From This Trip? I learned again about the protecting and providing hand of the Lord. It’s something we have to learn again and again, it seems. I saw it in my own situation and very clearly in others as well on the trip. Faith in anything but Him is futile. No amount of planning (we did a lot), intelligence (we have a lot), or strength (we are very strong), can guarantee success. It is He who makes the work of our hands meaningful and it is He who sees our projects through.
I also learned anew the power of teamwork. It would have been difficult and impossible for most of the people on this trip to do this alone. In fact, some of those more insightful maybe even thought it would be impossible for everyone to make it. But through teamwork and encouragement, one pedal at a time, we were able to cross all of Nicaragua, through ruff roads and mountains.
The Most Challenging Part / Aspect Of This Trip Was: Getting to Puerto Cabezas in one piece. And I obviously failed. Just kidding. But seriously.
But for real, the biggest challenge…I don’t know. I’d have to say one challenge was physical: trying to get good video with only one fully functioning arm. We’ll see how well I did when I get around to editing. Another challenge was not being able to help out as much as I wanted. I couldn’t lift anything. I couldn’t drive. I couldn’t do what I was planning on doing.
In What Way Were You Inspired by The Sea To Sea Tour?I was definitely inspired by the faith and hard work of the team. It was awesome to see how the team worked together, how some gave here and some gave there. It seemed everyone was cared for and felt like an important part of the team–which they were! It was inspiring to see everyone reach the coast having completed the entire trip together.
How Will This / Or Has This Impacted Your Life? I don’t really know how it’s impacted my life. Aside from a renewed appreciation for the power and love of God, and the richness of life in community, I’m not sure what the lasting impacts will be. Maybe it will be that I can never again lift my arm straight up, but I hope that’s not the case.
Another important thing that has impacted me is the generosity of those on the team. Generosity in so many ways, but in a few specific ways perhaps more than others. I’ll keep them to myself right now, but it stirs something within me and hopefully an outcome will be a renewed generosity flowing from my own heart.

What Did I Learn From This Trip? I was again reminded how important team work is. I am so thankful for the support team taking their role seriously and others that took on additional roles.
The Most Challenging Part / Aspect Of This Trip Was: Ensuring the safely of everyone, I felt somewhat personally responsable for this. We ended having 10% of the group significantly injured. Thats not too good.
In What Way Were You Inspired by The Sea To Sea Tour? Its not too often I get 8 days away from everything and get to spend it on a bike. I was inspired by the climatic and cultural diversity as we travelled through a cross section of Nicaragua. I also loved being with a group of likeminded people and doing something crazy together. It was great to link up with old friends too. I was also inspirted by the generosity of the people that donated for this event, and the interest so many had in following it.
How Will This / Or Has This Impacted Your Life? This was so fun, lets organize some more of these!!!

April Voorberg
What Did I Learn From This Trip? Every life is so very valuable. From the child waving at us driving/cycling by to the family that welcomed us in during a downpour of rain to each cyclist as they biked up and down rough hills.
We are safest when we live in HIS time.
The Most Challenging Part / Aspect Of This Trip Was: I really wanted to make sure that all the cyclist were safe, healthy and happy. It was tough doing that for 24 different people, especially when struggling over the language! I was constantly trying to put myself in their shoes…and let me tell you I did NOT want to be cycling on some of those roads!
In What Way Were You Inspired by The Sea To Sea Tour? Well, funny as it may sound, I would really love to be able to get into cycling and be active that way.
Also, I was inspired by the grand beauty that God has created clear across this whole country. I am inspired by the Nicaraguan ways.
How Will This / Or Has This Impacted Your Life? This has definitely given me an added excitement for our work here as we dive back into our various tasks here at the Nehemiah Center.
I am so thankful for the time I could spend with each person on this trip…each person has impacted my life.
Kevin Voorberg
What Did I Learn From This Trip? Well I think there is a lot I can take away from this trip. The little box I put Nicaragua in before has been blown wide open to include all the diversity we saw in both people and the country. I have come to understand in a deeper way the importance of working as a group and putting others needs in front of your own for the great good of the body of believers. God has created us to work together in the advancement of his Kingdom and I am thankful to him for showing me some beautiful examples of this on the Sea to Sea.
Like some others I have also grown in my knowledge of bicycles, bag balm, pro-max bars, the importance of securing water bottles in a truck flying over 10 foot wide potholes.
The Most Challenging Part / Aspect Of This Trip Was: I would have to say it was not “freaking” out when we mis-placed 5 of our bikers on day 3. It was crushing that I had in essence led the flock astray that day with my directions. It was also a time when we really could have used a motorbike reminding me that Dave was not with us. I questioned God’s actions a lot that morning. The other most challenging part would be the Spanish. It is still a work in progress for me and to have so much interaction and time with Nicaraguans was quite stressful at times. I always seemed to know enough to get me into trouble! On the flip side I have never grown more in my spanish abilities than in those 10 days.
In What Way Were You Inspired by The Sea To Sea Tour? There was a piece of every rider and person involved in this trip that has inspired me. I have seen simple thoughts and basic notes turned into a pretty seemless trip across the country all made possible by the incredible support staff.
As each rider pushed further and further I was left standing in awe of the achievement that they completed. When Dave and I drove those rodes in November we were thinking maybe a handful would make all the hills, leaving the rest to be driving in trucks through Rio Blanco and similar areas. Yet if it wasn’t on the bike it was walking beside the bike, as each person climbed each summit.
How Will This / Or Has This Impacted Your Life? Like most I don’t know exactly how this has impacted my life. God is still working through this experience to change me I believe. I began to realize why He has called April and I down here to Nicaragua.
One real way I have been impacted is how much deeper of a relationship I have with all those on the trip especially with those living here in Nicaragua.
